Our ongoing Youth Scholarship Development and Leadership Program, (part of our commitment to raising the level of outdoor skills and safety on the Island), provides scholarships (including 18 months of vigorous training, throughout the winter as well as the summer season) culminating in the team of Manx students partaking in an overseas expedition.
Places are offered to ‘6th form’ pupils from the Island’s Secondary Schools, for those who show immense enthusiasm and have the dedication to complete the comprehensive training in; Sea Kayaking, Mountain Walking, Coasteering, Rock Climbing, Navigation, Teamwork and Expedition Planning. Previous expedition members have also used the trip and its training to complete their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award and as a springboard into a career in Outdoor Education. Norway 2009 Youth Scholarship Expedition
Our most recent youth scholarship expedition.
All secondary schools on the Isle of Man were informed, and during 2008 students were given the opportunity to partake in weekly group training sessions.
From this group, the small tightly knit team of 7 students made up of students from Ramsey Grammar High School and King Williams College were self selected. Varied challenging training, planning and periodic assessments continued in their preparation for Norway 2009!
This Expedition has just returned - check the Adventurous Experiences blog for posts and updates.

Vancouver Island 2007 Expedition
The 2007 Youth Scholarship expedition team was made up of students from Ramsey Grammar High School and Queen Elizabeth II High School. The group trained hard on their skills, (particularly sea kayaking) forming a tightly knit team. They also worked towards personal performance awards. Another part of the challenge for the group was raising money towards their travel costs.
Following a very successful circumnavigation of the Isle of Man at Easter, the team spent three weeks on expedition (self sufficient and predominantly wild camping) completing an 8 day remote sea kayak expedition around Cape Scott, a 4 day mountain hiking expedition in Strathcona National Park, and a 4 day residential on Orcas Island.
