Basic Hill Navigation

This course has both theoretical and practical elements. The practical elements take place in the unspoilt Manx countryside, and therefore may well be in unfamiliar, and occasionally uneven or steep terrain. Offered as four half-days or evenings. Sessions can be scheduled a week apart to allow for personal practice and consolidation.

Hill Navigation

For those wishing to cover sessions 1 – 4 in one block, a two day intensive course is offered, including an optional overnight camp. Please contact us for more details.

Those with experience who wish to further their skills may wish to cover;

  • Contours – use of contours as primary means of navigation.
  • Low Visibility and Night Navigation using pacing, timing and compass work.
  • Weather – reading synoptic charts, isobars, fronts and depressions.
  • Comprehensive route planning, personalising Naismith’s Rule using pacing and timing, use of grid references.
  • Introductory leadership skills in the field.

Following this course, we offer multi-day trips which include Mountain Walking to North Wales, The Lakes and Scotland. Please contact us, or see the schedule for details.

testimonials An Evening Paddle

“…we were pleasantly surprised how easy it was. We glided smoothly over the gentle waves as the sun dipped through a precious sunset and the seals played in the glassy sea around us. It was altogether magical and over too quickly. We can't wait to do it again and would recommend it to everyone”
