Strangford Lough
Designated as Northern Islands first Marine Nature Reserve, Strangford Lough is internationally renowned for its abundance and diversity of habitats and species. It is the largest inlet in the UK & Ireland covering 80 square nautical miles. It is full of small islands with a myriad of channels and routes to explore.
A relaxed paddling holiday exploring this unique location takes place in July 2010, open to all members of the adventure club.
Thursday 22nd July 2010
10am Depart IOM – arrive Belfast 1pm, drive to Portaferry on the Strangford “narrows” the entrance to Strangford Lough.
Kayaks will be packed with kit and we will depart from Portaferry approx 5pm – paddling to Salt Island, one of many small islands in Strangford Lough. Stay in the Canoeists bothy.
Friday 23rd July
Set off and paddle deep into the Lough, taking in the many islands teeming with birdlife etc…. Wild camp on the banks of the Lough with easy walking into one of the nearby villages to sample the local beverages if desired….
Saturday 24th July
Paddle back south, along the other side of the Lough taking time to explore the interesting shoreline of Britains largest tidal inlet. We return to our Bothy for an evening social and feasting….
Sunday 25th July
Paddle to Portaferry, pack up kayaks onto the trailer and hit the road, back in Belfast for 1pm there will be some time for lunch and for you to explore this great city before the return ferry at 6pm.
