Sam Murphy

Sam first met Keirron when he visited Queen Elizabeth High School while he was recruiting students for the Youth Development Scheme. This entailed a year of vigorous training, throughout the winter as well as the summer months. During this time the small group Sam was part of, were trained in sea kayaking, hill walking and navigation, coasteering, rock climbing and expedition planning, forming a tightly knit team. They also worked towards personal performance awards.

The finale of the training was an major expedition to Vancouver Island, consisting of an eight day kayak expedition, a four day hiking trip and a four day residential stay. Sam applied himself fully and gained a lot from the scheme. Once he experienced a bit of the outdoor life style, and clearly displayed commitment and a positive attitude, he was offered a full time job for a year for Keirron as an assistant kayak coach, assistant coasteering instructor, navigational wizard and assistant climbing instructor.

Sam’s hobbies involve all of his job aspects; he loves sea kayaking and kayak surfing, rock climbing, coasteering, BMX and badminton. He is also now a regular member of Keirron’s Ultra-fit Circuit at the gym.

Over the next year he is working to achieve numerous coaching and general qualifications, involving all aspects of outdoor education. Also Sam wishes to do an open crossing in a single kayak and is going to attempt to set the record, along with John Keggin, for paddling around the island in a double kayak.

Sam was born on the Isle of Man, and has lived in Kirk Michael all his life. At the end of his gap year Sam is looking forward to going to Bangor University, North Wales, to study Sports Science with Outdoor Activities.
